All-ceramic crowns in Vienna

A dental crown encloses the prepared tooth and stabilises the remaining tooth structure. It may be considered when a tooth is so weakened by decay, a fracture or an extensive filling that another filling is not sufficient. 

Crowns are therefore always used when the tooth root is in a good condition, but the teeth themselves are heavily damaged. However, crowning can also be advisable after root canal treatment.

Especially in the visible area, appearance plays an important role alongside durability. Ceramic allows light to pass through in a similar way to natural tooth substance, allowing it to blend harmoniously into the dental arch. 

A dental crown therefore has a dual function: on the one hand to restore stability and on the other hand also aesthetics.

Various ceramic materials are available for crowns. The choice depends on the position, tooth shade, bite and load.

Traditional all-ceramic is particularly suited for front teeth because the colour, translucency and surface can be finely tuned and the crown looks the most natural (optimal aesthetics).

However, with severely discoloured teeth, the darker underlying structure can show through. In addition, all-ceramic restorations require more of the tooth to be ground down.

With a zirconia-ceramic crown, a zirconia framework is additionally veneered with ceramic to combine stability and a natural appearance. Therefore, it is even slightly better suited for front teeth than a full zirconia crown, which consists solely of zirconia.

Crowns made from these materials can also be useful if darker tooth structure needs to be better masked.

Which variant is suitable is decided on the basis of the overall dental situation. Tooth shade, load, position of the tooth and existing tooth structure are assessed together in the process.

If a front tooth is stable and, above all, its shape or colour is to be changed, a  Veneer or inlay might be considered. In this process, only the outer tooth surface is prepared and fitted with a thin ceramic shell.

A crown, on the other hand, covers the entire visible part of the tooth and is more likely to be used when the tooth also needs to be stabilised. The decision therefore depends primarily on the condition of the tooth.

SVA, KFA and private

Severe teeth grinding increases the load on crowns and the entire dentition. 

A metal-free restoration may be possible, but it must be carefully adjusted to the bite. 

For very long bridges, depending on the load, a metal-ceramic solution may be more suitable.
