Dental prosthesis with many benefits
Zirconia crowns impress with their natural appearance. They blend unnoticeably into the dentition – and there are no dark metal edges at the gums either.
Zirconia or zirconium dioxide retains its natural white colour. Due to the properties of the material, colourants from tea, coffee, red wine and the like can hardly penetrate.
A dental prosthesis made of zirconia is also well suited for allergy sufferers, as the material is very well tolerated. Therefore, they are frequently used in dentistry.
A zirconia crown will accompany you for a very long time – as it is fracture-resistant, highly stable and therefore particularly durable. This makes it suitable for both front and back teeth.
What is a zirconia crown?
What is a zirconia crown?
A zirconia crown is made from zirconium dioxide or zirconium oxide/zirconia – an extremely robust yet aesthetic ceramic material.
The advantages of such a dental crown lie in its natural appearance, stability, durability and good biocompatibility. Therefore, they are frequently used in dentistry.

What types of zirconia crowns are there?
What types of zirconia crowns are there?
If you opt for a zirconia crown, you have various options:
- Full zirconiaCrown made entirely of zirconia. Very high quality.
- Zirconia ceramic: Zirconia crown with a ceramic outer layer. In the anterior region, it looks even better than a full-zirconia restoration.
If you don’t want a zircon, a crown made of All-ceramic possible. Visually, it is the most natural (as it is slightly translucent) and most attractive, but the tooth has to be ground down more.
Which variant is chosen is always an individual decision.
If, for example, your tooth is discoloured, a solution using zirconia is usually more suitable than an all-ceramic dental crown, as the discoloration could show through all-ceramic. Zirconia, on the other hand, is not translucent and covers the discoloration.
We will discuss with you on an individual basis which type of dental prosthesis is best suited to your situation and take your wishes and requirements into account.
When is a zirconia crown advisable?
When is a zirconia crown advisable?
A zirconia crown is always used when a tooth is no longer stable enough to be treated with a filling or an inlay.
Typical reasons for such cases include:
- severely damaged teeth due to tooth decay
- Tooth fractures or accidents
- extensive loss of substance
- aesthetic corrections in the anterior region
Together with our patients, we discuss whether a filling, an inlay or a crown (all-ceramic options are also available) is the most appropriate choice in each individual case.

What you should consider
What you should consider
Dental crowns made of zirconium dioxide usually incur higher costs than other solutions.
Moreover, severe teeth grinding can complicate the path to a dental crown, as in that case the bite must be adjusted first.
Our patients are informed in detail about the costs and the course of treatment in order to be able to make an informed decision.

Investigation
During a thorough examination, as dentists we take a look at the affected tooth or teeth.
2. Consultation
As part of the examination, we will discuss your options for dental prosthetics (full zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-zirconia, all-ceramic, etc.).
3. Preparation & Temporary Restoration
Now we are going to shape your tooth and fit a temporary resin crown.
4. Preparation
Your all-ceramic or zirconia crown is crafted by our technicians.
5. Integration
After 1 to 2 weeks, your final zirconia crown will be ready. We will fit it precisely.
Durability and care
Durability & Care
Zirconia crowns are known in dentistry for their durability. Nevertheless, the same applies to them: good oral hygiene is the be-all and end-all.
These include:
- thorough daily oral hygiene
- regular dental check-ups
- professional dental cleans
In short, a crown needs the same care as a natural tooth.
This preserves not only the crown, but also the entire oral health in the long term.

Does it always have to be a crown?
No, a dental crown is not appropriate in every case.
In the anterior region, for example, it is also possible to Veneers or inlays can be a good solution, for example, to whiten teeth and cover up discolouration. In contrast, a crown is designed to stabilise teeth and thus ensure that they do not break.
